Gait trainers – by Philip and Louise.

1. What is a gait trainer?
A gait trainer is an aid to walking that assists people to get out of their wheelchairs and move freely around the centre.
2. Why did we buy them?
It was considered that it would benefit a number of the centre members to either improve or more importantly, maintain their levels of mobility.
3. Who can use them?
All the centre members have access to them but those who would benefit the most are understandably given priority eg Philip, Shirley and Nick.
4. How did we get them? (each trainer cost £850)
The first trainer was funded by a generous donation from Pilgrims Way Masonic Lodge. This proved such an outstanding success that funds were raised for a second trainer by holding a charity night at the Oval Tavern, East Croydon, with the bulk of the money raised by centre members, such as Denis, selling raffle tickets and the sale of pictures that were painted by the Bramley Hill Art Group which is organised by the Old Coulsdon Art Society.

Our thanks go to Pilgrims Way Masonic Lodge, the owners and staff of the Oval Tavern, the Old Coulsdon Art Society and members of staff at the Bramley Hill Centre whose efforts made these charity nights a success as these two gait trainers have benefited us greatly – we thank you all.

Mobility Aids In Use

Kevin enjoying a fishing day out

I attend the Bramley Hill Centre for disabled people and I have always liked to go fishing. So when a man who works at Bramley Hill, called Roger, asked me if I would like to go fishing I said yes.

We went on a lovely late summer's day – it was a Saturday. We had a good chat on the way there and when we arrived at the spot it turned out to be an old chicken farm.

Roger put me in a safe place and I started to fish. I was lucky enough to catch two perch fish.

I had a really good day. I hope Roger will take me fishing again this year.
