Rutherford School is an Independent Day School in South Croydon for 25 children, aged 2 - 12 years, who have profound and multiple learning difficulties, associated physical disabilities and complex medical needs. The pupils also have communication difficulties and many have a visual impairment.

Rutherford School has a qualified team of therapists and nursing staff to cater for the wide range of physical and medical needs. The team includes a Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist, Speech & Language Therapist, Music Therapist and Nurses.

Placements are funded by the child's LEA; we principally take children from Croydon and Sutton, but also from surrounding boroughs, where the child's home is within one hour's drive of the school.

The School is based in a large house within spacious grounds which has been adapted to meet the individual needs of the children.

The children are grouped into 4 classes:

Ladybird 2 - 4 years Ladybird - early years
Lollipop 5 - 6 years Lollipop - Key Stage 1
Sunshine 7 -9 years Sunshine - Key Stage 2
Rainbow 9 - 12 years Rainbow - Key Stage 2/3

Each class group has a staff team of at least 1 Teacher and 3 Classroom Assistants.

The school has its own hydrotherapy pool, sensory room, and physiotherapy room. It also has the benefit of a spacious garden that has specially adapted swings, a sensory garden, and appropriate shade for the summer. We are currently building an annexe located on the left hand side of the garden which will comprise 4 classrooms with en-suite bathrooms, 3 one to one rooms, a therapy room, and a nurses' room.

The pupils' meals are prepared at the school by a qualified cook who adapts the menu to meet the individual needs of the children.

The school has two Sunshine Variety Club minibuses.

All of our pupils have access to a broad and balanced curriculum which is delivered in a differentiated and relevant manner so that it is appropriate and meets the need of every individual child.
